I have spent my life wondering at the wonder of other people’s words and have very rarely considered the beauty of my own.
What I’m discovering in every lush sentence is that each word, set out in the syntax I choose is an important and essential act of creation capturing the essence of a moment in MY human history: A micro-story I have the right to set down in whatever format I so desire.
It always has always been my right.
There is enough space for everyone on and off the page- though the gatekeepers over the years have been replaced by the voice in my head: Both telling me some magnificent lies to keep me small.
THAT VOICE is somehow universal - It whispers and sometimes shouts repetitive strains of discord to our subconscious.
THAT VOICE is us, routinely programming ourselves over time with a whole pattern of self curated playlists offering us so-called truths as to why we should not follow our passions:
Because we are not good enough,
smart enough,
brave enough,
worthy enough.
It starts young - my kiddo has recently begun songwriting with his two friends and was kindly advised by classmates to:
STOP! Because it (the song) won’t get released.
They are 10-years old!
But there is nothing that separates us from the artist, writer, musician, actor, sculptor, dancer, magician - except action.
So, here is my commitment to action:
Take daily action that lights me up, fills up my world with colours in all its crazy, unlikely forms.
Some of it may seep seeds of inspiration into my writing, but it doesn’t have to - because friends, I realised today that I love slapping colours onto paper - wide swathes of colour with the only purpose of making my heart sing.
And isn’t that enough?
It really doesn’t have to be more.
I have forgotten to play, but it’s time to shuck off the adult meat-suit and be a kid again, this time without worrying about lack: lack of resources, lack of permission, lack of acceptance, lack of time.
So what do you say, shall we play? 😉
For ma Players…
Take 3 minutes today (the time it takes to brew a cuppa) and play at whatever lights you up. No one is watching, no one cares.
Play, because that’s what your soul is calling for.
Then, tell me what you did…
I can’t wait… 💖
