Intro to Wing 101
First time here? Welcome!
Don’t despair, we don’t always feel our wings.
They lie gently folded behind our shoulder blades, waiting.
Sometimes, out of the corner of our eye, when our mind is half here and half there, we notice other people’s wings fluttering and our hearts flutter along with them, because we are in the presence of magick.
Wing sightings are more frequent around children because they manifest magick freely. If you have children, try half-closing your eyes and smile to get a glimpse of their wings. The fluttering will be intermittent in some, stronger in others.
We highly recommend you are seated before a sighting, preferably with a warm drink and cosy socks. Relaxation unlocks wing observation.
Dispelling Myths:
Some of us wonder why our wings don’t work. The wondering makes us sad.
We see others doing so well. Their wings move freely. They are flying.
We wonder: Why not me?
So, we decide to give it a little try. We try to replicate what we have seen. After all if THEY can do it, we can too.
We shimmy our shoulders trying to shake our wings loose. When that doesn’t work, we try to prise them free with anger and reproach. Nothing happens. Some people even pretend that their wings are there, but the wings feel the struggle and stay hidden.
We become enraged at the injustice. We have TRIED after all.
When we don’t get the results we want, we give up. It is easier to give up.
It is easier to say: What a silly idea! I can’t fly. I don’t want to fly anyway.
It’s not true, though. Everyone can fly.
Deep down, we know it’s not true because we ache with disappointment.
That ache is longing.
We are Longing to Fly.
We are longing to fulfil an intense desire to soar so high that our hearts expand with uncontainable joy. The world becomes bright and beautiful. Our senses explode with new perception. Every person is a potential friend. We are unstoppable.
Inside we fizz. It is happiness.
There are still troubles. Flying does not solve difficulties.
We cannot fly away from those. Not ever.
But when we are soaring, with the wind against our skin and hearts joyous, troubles and difficulties seem managable. They become pebbles the ever flowing stream of our lives.
So, know that you can fly. It can be done.
There is no age restriction. There is no need for performance enhancers or special gagets.
That is the beauty of this sort of flying.
But you are here now. There is no need to worry.
You are in safe hands. I’ll show you exactly what you need to do.
You’ll be up, up and away within the hour.
Warm up:
Now you know that you have wings and where they are waiting.
Most likely, it’s been years since you shook them out. Maybe you’ve never even tried.
It’s ok.
A beginner’s mind is beautifully ready to listen and take action.
I’m right here by your side. We’ll do it together.
Wings can be shy at first, especially if you haven’t given them much attention.
Some little loves can be quite resistant to movement, preferring to stay sheltered by the warmth of the scapula.
But, it’s not good to let your wings remain permanently in the dark.
Too much alone time makes them deteriorate.
You can’t fly if your wings are full of holes!
Let’s get to it, then.
Stage One: Preparation
Step 1: Take a deep breath - long and slow, until you feel like you will burst. Then pause, retaining the breath. Then take in one more teeny, tiny sip of breath.
Hold it again. Then count to four and slowly breathe out.
Step 2: Repeat - this time as you breathe in, imagine:
a) Stunning shades of orange, gold, flamingo pink, periwinkle, ocean blue. Feel the warmth of the summer sun brushing against your bare skin, the tickle of sand against toes, the kiss of a breeze against the nape of your neck and down to your shoulder blades. Your skin prickles with goosebumps. You hear waves rhythmically lapping in a symphonic loop and as you slowly exhale, your wings begin to stir
OR:
b) A cloudless, cerulean blue sky, and in the distance, misty hills a battenburg of apple-green and butterscotch. You delight in a fanfare of sonorous birdsong and smell sun-scorched, loamy earth underfoot. Your wings slowly unfurl, tentative at first. The sun’s rays on these tender protuberances spark such exuberance that your wings open wide and you sigh deeply.
You have let go of something you hadn’t realised you were carrying.
Tears may fall.
STAY CALM.
Trust that everything will be fine.
Ride the wave of relief. Let excitement bubble up inside.
You are doing it!
The Wonder of Wings:
Your wings are freed. Your self-belief in your ability to fly is growing by the second. You are giddy, light-headed, heart racing.
Remember to take slow, deep breaths. This will ground you as momentum gathers in your body.
You may find yourself bouncing on your toes. Delight in the bounce.
Your delight will make your wings flap faster!
If you aren’t moving yet don’t worry. Go at your own pace, but remember that you have to take action eventually.
Your wings are gossamer thin - invisible to some, but they are stronger than you know. When extended, they will carry you vast distances.
Let them extend. Don’t be afraid of taking up space. There is enough space for everyone to fly without crashing into each other.
Luxuriate in the abundant spaciousness of your unbound wings.
Feel the buoyant weight of them in your shoulders. Feel the wind ripple across their powerful frame. The feeling is at once terrifying and intensely exhilarating. There is no greater pleasure.
Remember, at times, the wings have a mind of their own but ultimately you are in control. They are you and you are them.
Feel the power of their broad strokes as they slice up and down, creating huge energy arcs. They are YOU and YOU are them.
YOU made this energy.
Take a second to notice how this feels. Let a smile curve around your lips and enjoy its warmth travelling down to your heart.
You are almost ready to fly!
Stage Two:
Keeping the smile in your heart, let your wings flap around like playful puppies and curious kittens. Momentum is magick. Magick is energy.
It is the energy YOU manifested. It is yours.
Claim it with wild abandon.
Possible Side Effects:
In this state of grace you may exhibit the any of following behaviours:
Euphoria
Weightlessness
Acute perception
Increased tenderness towards others
You may have an irrepressible desire to undertake any or all of the following actions:
Laugh
Dance
Run
Skip
Sing
Hug your beloved, or a tree, or your cat, or a stranger
Desire, wonder, joy and belief are key components of the flying process.
Do not resist. Let your senses guide you.
Before you know it, your wings will lift you clean off the ground.
Supercharged by joy, your wings will be powerful enough to propel you far enough to reach other heartbeats. Distance is immaterial.
Once you have taken your first flight, you will be planning the next.
Who could resist?
Landing and aftercare:
After a while, you will need to land. No one can remain in a state of euphoria.
Your wings will retract and you’ll descend.
This is normal. Just breathe.
Pro Tip:
If negative feelings after landing, remember how you felt when your wings opened. Hold this memory in your bodymind loosely. Your shoulders should become less tense, your movements more fluid.
As you return to your everyday life, remember your wings.
Hear them rustle in the breeze. See their beauty reflected in others eyes.
You have claimed them. They are yours.
No one can take this away from you.
When the longing in your heart returns, know that you must take flight once more.
I was watching a kid skip (instead of walk) along this afternoon and wondered why I'd stopped doing that!
Love this! So many insights that have also been running through my mind 💕✨
